I bought my boat and motor during the off season. I noticed an epoxy type substance on the top of the block. I just ignored it because the motor was running good but was not charging. When I put it the water I had no power, I noticed that the timing advance was not moving. The other day I pulled the flywheel off to try and free up the timing advance and noticed the epoxy substance was from the stator. The charging side I am assuming.

Now for the question.

Can my stator be repaired or does it have to be replaced. If a new one is needed what do I need to look for so this doesn't happen again

Thank you in advance.

Those old stators had a habit of doing that. The newer ones are built different so just replace it. Also clean up your timing advance. Check your charging system after replacing it.

Ive cleaned up the epoxy before and recoated with the epoxy i use on my boat hull.
Check the stator with a multimeter and retry it, that may save you some cash.
Freeing up the timing advance may get you all the power back by itself

rectifiers can be tested. They are either good or bad.
