I am putting a new water pump impeller in my 50 hp merc and noticed that connection between the water pump outlet (the notched, conical riser on top of the pump) and the bottom end of the tube going up into the top of the engine doesn't seem to be tight. There is a washer inside the upper pump housing below the outlet, but the topside of the outlet is just hard plastic. Should there be a rubber tube seal on the bottom of the riser pipe? Seems like a really loose connection which would explain why my tattletale is always pretty weak. I've hunted around the various parts sites and there seems to be 2 types, a straight piece of rubber tubing and a piece with a lip on one end. Can't find either in a diagram of my engine, but they are both listed as parts for it.

Re: 1973 Merc 500 water tube seal missing?

When i changed the impeller on my 1971 merc 500 50hp the outlet of the pump just pushed onto that pipe that goes to the motor, But then again i got a impeller kit which came with a new upper housing of the impeller.

I've used this website for diagrams etc, maybe its some help to you. http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/449_19.cfm

I am guessing the seal is part #29 in this diagram (Merc part 38452):
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...OUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 1)/parts.html

(And the "washer" you describe is part #30 in the diagram)

Without the washer and seal, you will not seal on an OEM/old style pump housing. As said above, newer replacement pump housings do away with both the seal and the washer, and just fit snug onto the water tube.

Thanks both. I've seen those diagrams and I think the part#29 is missing from my unit. it is the original waterpump. I actually ordered one of the "other" types from a different parts list that has the lip on one end. Hopefully, it will slip onto the end of the water tube. I'll let you know in a week or so.
