Judging from the past responses, I need to rebuild my carb due to misfire and backfire when throttling up from idle. My question is can a decent shade tree mechanic (me) do this or is it best left to the shop?

i'm a shade tree mech., and i did it.
imho, if ya were gonna rebuild a easy carb to work on. a 2gc would be one to start with. they're pretty straight forward and don't have gobs of pieces like some carbs do.
imho, get a mercurser carb kit. a mercrusier service manual. #1 i think. or maybe #2. and go for it. read the mercruiser serice manual to a tee and do what it says and ya should have a pretty good out come. assuming the carb. is rebuildable. some are and some aren't. how ya tell the difference, i don't know. but some will work out and some don't.
do use a soaking type carb. cleaner and do use compressed air to blow out all the small passages. set up to mercrusier specs.

Ziggy,

Thanks for the response. I will give it a try. I guess if it is not successful, the worst thing that happens is I get a little experience and hand it off to a real carb mechanic.
