I'm taking ownership of a 1973 Mercury 9.8 that was kept in mint condition during the time my grandfather owned it up to 1988. Since then, it's been serviced a couple of times, the last time being about 5-6 years ago. But though it was serviced, it was used probably 2 to 4 times since 1988. It's been stored inside until 2003, moved here and there. It's not something we would want to get rid of. After 2003 it was stored under shelter out of the weather, out of the sun, though actually outside. It's been on a dolly, but has likely had saltwater 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up it's shaft, as the house it was in was flooded by Hurricane Isabel and had 3 feet of water in the house. (2003)

When I get this, I'm going to take it into the shop for service, but I'm not savvy on what to ask to be done, and don't want them to suggest overkill and I not really know if it's overkill or not (with overkill cost too).

With this situation being what it is, can someone give me some advice on what things would be good to have done to this motor before I begin using it? What type service to ask for so I'm not given wrong or overkill advice on what's need? Would it be good to start it first or just take it to the shop for service without trying it? I don't want to start it and have anything be inside it which screws it up right away.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
