I just reassembled the LU after a complete seal change and fired it up yesterday. It had a good strong discharge from the new water pump and so far no LU leaks to speak of!

I noticed something that I hadn't before - there is water flowing from above the water pump housing, which I highlighted with red arrows. See picture below:

Is this normal? As I said I'm getting a very strong discharge from the water pump... does this indicate that the water tube is leaking at one of the connections? The motor ran great during my test yesterday...

That's normal. As long as you are getting a "strong dishcarge", that means nothing is plugged up. It's not uncommon to see water coming from a joint like that. It's fine.

Perfectly normal. There is a member by the name of Ezeke (not sure I'm spelling it right) who has an fantastic understanding of the 9.5 I think it was him who once posted a picture of the inner exhaust housing that showed a hole where the water in your picture comes from. It is intended to operate the way your picture shows. You might try a search to see some of his posts. I must also say you have barely enough of the leg in your pail. You should have a higher pail than your using. Best of luck. Rick.

I appreciate your responses, gentlemen. My mind is now at ease. I will be sure to run it in more water next time!

I was running my newly bought 9.5(1970) in a bucket today and noticed a good coating of oil on the lower unit below the lube-fill port down to the cavitation plate. This port is easily seen in the motor in post#1. Is this from overfilling by the previous owner or perhaps I need new gaskets somewhere?
I can live with a little leakage as this is a backup only motor. If all my lower unit oil drains out after an hour or two I would be in trouble, though.
