1974 40hp Johnson Norseman impeller change

Hey guys..I am about to do one of these for a friend and wanted any tips you may have!! The shift linkage release is in the lower unit right?<br /><br />Thanks

It all depends on which engine you have. <br /><br />Does the exhaust exit the propeller hub, or above?<br /><br />If it's the latter, you have the older style lower unit.<br /><br />I do not recall if they still put a plate on the side of the lower unit, or not, to access the shift linkage. Being a "74" I expect-NOT.<br /><br />In that case, the shift "disconnect" is under the carburetor.<br /><br />Do yourself a favor, spend $30.00 and get a manual.

Its the older style..The exhaust is from above..We changed it..It was an oval plate on the port side of the lower unit..<br /><br />one other question..What should the fuel mix be on this motor?? 50:1??
