I recently bought a 74' Johnson 50 hp model # 50esl74m.
The motor is suppose to have extremely low hours. The compression is 155 lbs on both cylinders and it appears to be brand new and never tinkered with under the cowel.
Anyways,
All I have is the motor (no controls) and I have it stored on the back of a 15' aluminum boat.
I fired it up a couple months ago and it started right up and ran perfect. No hiccups or anything.
Yesterday I go to start it and all it does is turn over without any signs of starting. I tried it again this morning with the same results. I can spray mix directly into the carbs and it will start to go and maybe fire up for a second or two and die.
I've tried it with the choke in/choke out and nothing. I checked the fuel filter screen at the fuel pump and its spotless. I pulled the large fuel line that goes to the carbs and squeezed the bulb and there's plenty of gas.
The bulb gets hard so i'm sure there's plenty of fuel in the bowls.
Before I pull the carbs and check them out for gunk is there anything else that could cause this? I really didn't want to have to start pulling things off since this motor is in pristine condition.
