Had a bit of motor trouble at the end of the season. Seemed like the carbs or a carb was flooding. Good idle but when I put it in gear and tried to throttle up, it was bogging down. If I kept forcing it, it eventually "cleared" and would speed up and get on plane. This happened at times, and at other times started and ran up to speed fine. Other times when this acted up, I would shift to neutral, raise the RPM with the warm-up lever until it responded cleanly and then shift and take off.

Had an OMC shop squeeze me in to take a quick look. Spark and compression are fine. We took the boat to a local launch ramp and submerged the lower unit while still on the trailer. Shop owner (30 years in the business) ran it at what I would think was close to WOT and it ran and shifted fine. Power pack, coils and stator, fuel pump have all been replaced recently so the mech thought it might be dirty carbs. I have the time and like a challenge so I bought the kits. Sierra with the floats but know the cork floats are long ago replaced but not much cost savings w/o the floats.

So I get to pulling the carbs today. The sheet that comes with the kits doesn't say much. Clean it, adjust float, re-install in reverse....... I don't have experience so could use the advice of those that have.

Looks like 3 core plugs. Should I remove all 3? What tools and techniques are appropriate? Two on top

I removed the high speed jet with a narrow screw driver

These all show the top carb. Looks pretty clean to me so far as I have not started to clean it yet. Maybe I'll see more issues in the other 2. Please feel free to comment on any items regarding cleaning and re-installing. I have bookmarked a post regarding the link and sync and will be looking to make those checks later. Or, am I off-track and my running ploblems may be something else.........?????

Thanks to all in advance.

Re: 1977 70 HP Evinrude CArbs

I just rebuilt the carb on my 12 hp snowblower. It was running terrible. Took it apart and every thing looked clean and I figured that might not be my problem. Removed the Welch plugs and sure enough the fixed low speed jets under the one plug were crudded up. Put it back together and it ran like a new one.

It takes more time to remove those carbs than rebuild them so you might just as well do a complete overhaul.

I am a belt and suspenders type of person so after I seat the new plugs I coat them with clear nail polish to be certain they are sealed.

Did all the plugs come in the rebuild kit?

There is a service bulletin out for the '76 model that does really pertain to the '77 and '78's to an extent. The jets could need to be resized. I know that I had to do it for my '77 70hp. It would stutter and die when the throttle was given almost any gas at all in gear. Did the modifications and it is probably the strongest engine that I could ever ask for. If you want to send me a private message I will send you the service bulletin and you can check the specs on your carbs and see if they have been done. I will probably not check here again until Saturday or Sunday but when I see your pm I will be happy to send the bulletin to you.

Yes it appears the kits includes several core plugs. Did a bit more reading of old posts and it was suggested that they could be drilled and then pulled with an awl. Agree that these should be removed even if the carbs dont appear dirty. Going to give it a try.

fireman, my appologies on the year. It is a 74 and I am quite certain of that. Model 70473M. Had a brain fart when I posted it as a 1977 but have corrected that. I will PM you just the same.

The only core plug you should pull is the one right on top of the carb. There's holes under it that have to to do with the idle circuit. Make sure they're clean.
