I recently picked up a used evinrude 70hp. I've replaced the powerpack, power regulator, and 2 out of the 3 ignition coils. I also cleaned out the carburators and changed the gearcase oil & plugs. It runs now but needs to be choked to start it, even when the engine has been warmed up. It will not idle unless you give it a little gas but at the same time chokes out if you give it throttle too quickly. If you put it in gear though it dies almost immediately. The one time I was able to keep it running in gear the boat barely did 15mph with the engine wide open. Any ideas or suggestions on what's wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I would lean (no pun intended) toward looking at the carbs again if youre sure its sparking on all 3. Did you soak them in cleaner and install new kits?

Good luck!

Why did you replace the powerpack and coils?

Do you have a factory service manual?

If you have to keep choking it to stay running, then the low speed idle jets may be clogged.
If it dies when you give it gas, maybe low compression on one or more cylinders.
It could also be caused by poor spark - points.

Sounds more like a shot engine.

Would have to have more information for any real help.

Get a factory repair manual.

Thank you Hadley, I just cleaned the carbs with some spray and a rag. I'm going to really go through them this weekend though. Does anyone have any tips on rebuilding these carbs?

I guess Dhadleys response was easier to take. Good luck.

Thank you for your input as well AJP. I will pay special attention to the jets when I rebuild the carbs. Hopefully this will take care of the problem.
