1974 888 Mercruiser 19' Sea Ray

What is the switch on top of the shift mechanism? I have wire that is not connected. Have no idea where it goes. It is a black wire. Any ideas?

It is a shift-interrupt switch to cut engine power momentarily when you shift gears. I believe it runs to the coil in a roundabout way.
