So I picked this 1974 bayliner 1850 discory up off craigslist and I was wondering if any of you guys could help. I started off by trying to start it but I didn’t have any keys so I ran some wires off from the starter in hopes of doing something. I connected my battery and nothing happened. The only thing that worked was the pump switch and all it did was make a small sound. I try running jumper cables from the battery to the starter but had no luck with that. I then took the starter out and took it apart and that made it work or so I thought. I installed it back in and when I tried hot wiring the boat again nothing happened. I then tried three jumper cables again and I got the starter to spin but it wasn’t engaging. I wonder if I need to get a new solenoid for the starter or just get a whole new starter. Let me know what you guys think. Also I am getting no power to any of the gauges or anything. I was using a car battery but I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. I’ll keep you guys updated but just let me know your thoughts. Also I don’t know wether the engine is a Volvo penta aq130c or aq130d because they look the same and I wonder if there is much of a difference. Let me know. Thanks.
