I can pick up this boat for $800, is there any thing other than compresion test, and look for water in the lower unit that I should realy look at? The interior is a bit rough but the floor is solid, the stuf in the floor is pine needles. last tag/s expired june 2003. Most likely needs new battery, water pump, lower unit oil change, wax job. here are some pictures of it.

http://share.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=EeAt3DJizYtWKL

Thanx Richard

You might want to ask how long the rig has been setting and when the last carb overhaul was done and if there are any known problems with the engine. If the compression is good, lower unit good, may not be a bad deal. Boat looks in good shape from the pictures. Again, I would do some maint work on the engine if you get it. The older Chryslers liked to eat cylinders if they weren't properly cared for.

Those seats look like Wise brand, so they are not the original. That could mean that there were additional holes drilled in the floor for mounting that could have let water in. So check the floor around the seats well. Also check the seats, because that model Wise seat rotted out the seat base easily. Probably need replacements anyway, at around $150 each.

Also check out the O/B mounting holes in transom to see if they were well sealed or if water was getting into the transom. That could cause a real expensive repair.

Good luck, and let us know what you do.

Mark.

Okay, he said he only used it about 7 times the first year he had it. It has been setting since 2003 unused. #1 138 #2 132 # 145 on compression, does this look about right? A drop or two of water in the lower unit, no milky color. Floor is solid, but the transom is going to need work. I bought it for $350.00, he through in a wake board (complete) life jackets (big deal) lader, and padles, everything he had for it. Did I get hurt, or do ok?
Richard

I think for $350 you did good. But you did buy a project. Good to hear the floor is solid. The compression reading are OK, but because there is a 13 psi difference between high and low it means that one or more of the cylinders is showing wear. The initial accepted treatment is something like Seafoam to decarbonize and help loosen up any stuck rings. You can also do the compression check again with a teaspoon full of oil in each cylinder to help seal it a bit. If compression goes up a lot you know it is worn. Not worn out, just worn. If the Seafoam brings up compression, you are golden.

Motors are expensive, so it is probably worth maintaining the motor you have if it is in good running condition.

The carpets, seats, etc are all throw away/replacement items so you can price them out on the net. Budget carpet is available at the home centers.

The tansom can be repaired with Seacast (probably the most expensive fix) or with the traditional plywood and fiberglass/resin (cheapest fix). Both are strong. I take it the plate bolted to the transom is to support some rot?

Don't forget the trailer. If you can float the boat somewhere for a couple days, it is easier to paint the trailer and install new carpet on the bunks, check and re-pack or replace wheel bearings and tires. Plus a boat always looks better sitting on a clean trailer ;)

If the life vests are the orange U shapped ones, I would just toss them and buy some of the newer vests available. They are more comfortable for extended wear. You will be wearing one, right?

Don't forget to post questions about that outboard in the Chrysler forum. Lots of help there, but I hear it may take a day or two to get a reply.

Good luck,

Mark

IMHO, definitely a risk without a sea trial but at $350, I'd buy it. Sounds like you got a good deal.

Evaluate what it needs to bring her up to snuff. If the cost is going to be more than you are willing to spend and the time is more than you are willing to put into it, part it out and make a nice profit.

Good Luck.

Thanx Mark42 and RatFish
Parting it out was/is a thought, but I am leaning toward repairing it, at this time. When it stops raining/sleeting/snowing here and the sun comes out, I will run some soafoam thought it, and retest compression. I am sure that until I get the manual I will have a few questions for the engine people!

Mark42 Is seacast a type of phenolic? Like whale board etc.

Re: 1974 chrysler sport fury with 75hp

These old Chryslers are solid running boats if its all good and they were noted to be safe and stable Hulls, I had a 15.5ft with a 75hp some 17years ago. Used that boat in Lake Ontario many times. I sold the boat and new owner shoaled it in Georgian Bay, he made it back to the marina some 6 miles with a 9ft long split in the hull, the boat was a write-off but it did not sink from beneath him, this was a true testiment of how good they were.Any way if motor is good and boat is not 'whipped' you should be able to have a bit of fun with it

That thing looks just like the one I am re-doing.....after it went scuba diving., Lost my 70 horse, or big chunks of it due to the rocks on the bottom, but the boat itself was a easy repair project. I fabricated new seats all the way around for my old Chrysler. Didn't do it aft facing seat seat up. I wound up with a 45 horse to hang on it and after repairing a 18X2 in rip in the bottom, new floor, seats, rewiring, etc, I got me a pretty good old boat. I like it MUCH better than my 97 Glastron with a 90 'Rude on it.

Jcrain
how about some pics of yours? I (for one) would like to see what you did!

I am going to repair it, the family is just so excited about me getting something they think is for more than just fishing (is there more than fishing?).

I have an '80 15ft Sea Raider Open Bow that looks very similar. I hope you decide to restore that "classic". Looking forward to seeing and reading more about it.
