My 25' Cruiser with Mercruiser I/O Engine has a major steering problem that developed while under power.

The steering wheel locks if it turns to the right. To be more exact, the wheel will lock if it is turned a quarter turn to the right. It locks just barely after it starts turning right. Turning to the left will eventually unlock it.

It seems like a gear within the steering wheel assembly locks.

Also, another problem that may or may not be related is when the boat is under power the steering becomes extremely tight. We do have a 25 hp kicker connected to the motor via a tiebar.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1974 Cruiser Steering Problem

get it to lock up, then disconnect cable from out drive and you will know which end of the boat needs attention. if this is an original 30 year old system i suspect you will be replacing steering box and cable. good luck.
