I have a 1974 Evinrude 40hp Norseman. On the engine wiring harness right past the big rubber plug, the first wire coming off the harness is a single wire with a single plug connector. Mine is not hooked to anything. Does anyone have any idea what it is supposed to connect to? I don't have any other unconnected wires or plugs anywhere.

I am troubleshooting the electrical system. Good battery, new key switch, new solenoid, good starter, good connections. Turn the key and nothing. Jump across the solenoid, nothing. Put power straight to the starter and motor fires right up. I am thinking this unconnected wire may be the culprit. Possibly a ground?

Any help would be appreciated. Tim

look near solenoid, for a inline fuse holder, should be a short 20 amp fuse. that controls the starting circuit.

There is a fuse holder around on the other side of the starter with a short 20 fuse. Is this the one you are referring to? If so it is intact.

Here is a diagram of the wiring harness with an arrow drawn to the wire in question

Give us a clue. What color is the wire?

Check that the cut out safety switch is open circuit when in neutral
