1974 Evinrude 6hp

Need some info!!! Just cleaned the carb to get this engine going. It will fire up and stay running on half throttle but when I put the cover on it stalls out and acts like it is choking. The low speed adjustment screw does not seem to help.
Any ideas??

Exhaust is leaking through the gasket and starving the engine of oxygen, it needs to be replaced. Somebody should come along soon with a link to the parts breakdown so you?ll see where it is and get the part#.

Yes it could be either of the two gaskets #28 inTHIS DIAGRAM

Or the gasket between the power head and the leg, #79 inTHIS DIAGRAM
BUT I recently diagnosed this as the problem for identical symptoms on another forum and the trouble turned out to be not any of the gaskets but the tank in which the motor was running preventing the exhaust gas escaping.

Check those gaskets certainly but if there is no obvious leak and you have it in tank look to see if the tank is trapping the gases Try a more open tank or try it on the boat out on the water.

Thanks, I do have it in a tank... I am going to try it in the lake tomorrow.
