Recently purchased a boat with a 50 Horse Evinrude, I think it is a 1974, the model number is 50473M, Can anyone tell me what the M stands for and if it is actually a 74? Also, it had sat up for about 2 years, I ran it the day I bought it and it ran like a champ, 2 weeks later I put it in the water again, and it would start but when put in gear would die. I replaced the plugs, and it started but once again when put in gear would die. Any help would be appreciated, the fish are biting.

Hi khannah and welcome to the forum.

Yep, it's a 1974. The "M" basicaly is a "model" of the model.

First, after setting so long, you probably got gas in the carbs that has "varnished out" meaning you got goo in there that is plugging your jets. Get yourself a manual, OEM preferred and rebuild the carbs. There's no voodoo or magic involved but a good manual will be a ton of help. You can get generic manuals from iboats or get a reproduction manual from Ken Cook Comp.

You may also help yourself by also replacing the water pump impeller.

Good Luck and keep us posted. If you have any other questions, please post....Thanks!.
