Hi,
I have a 1974 Evinrude Fisherman OB. It sat for 2 years and this year would just not start. I bought new plugs (J6C), checked leads and coils. All looked good. I checked for sprark and they also looked good.
I bought a carb kit, cleaned the carb and remounted it. Now the motor catches but only runs for a few seconds.
I see the excess fuel coming from the carb if I over pump, so fuel is in the float.
Heres the thing- if I cover the air inlet with my thumb, the engine runs- not well, but it runs as long as my thumb is there. Also the throttle is full. If I remove my thumb, the engine begins to sputter and dies.
Fuel oil mixture is 50:1.
Any ideas?

There is a high probability that your high speed jet is clogged; it's located in the floor of the carburetor float bowl, behind and in line with the drain plug.

Also, if the float were working properly, the float valve should not allow the fuel to overflow when you continue to squeeze the primer bulb.

You should consider a rebuild kit for your carburetor.

Thanks Ezeke.
Although I did a carb rebuild, maybe I missed the high speed jet.
Good point on the float.

Did you do a complete rebuild/cleaning? The HS orifice needs to comeout and so does the welsh plug. Clean everything thoroughly!
