Hello, I have a 1974 25 HP Johnson 25RL74M and when I pulled the lower unit off to change the impeller I could hear a cracking noise that came from the top of the drive shaft, and once it was out some hard black molded plastic chunks fell out. I can look up inside and see more of this broken part but can't get it out. Just wondering if anybody knows what part this is? and do I have to take the powerhead off to get at it.
Thanks for your help.

Re: 1974 Johnson

Was it hard plastic or rubber that hardended? there are a few thru holes that have rubber seals/guides that the shaft slides throught. maybe they got old and cracked.

Re: 1974 Johnson

I’m sure this is hard plastic (not old rubber) almost a porcelain type hardness.

Shooter,
Are you sure the pieces that fell out are plastic?? You mentioned "almost a porcelain type hardness" Use a magnet to confirm that the pieces are not metal.
If the chunks ARE metal, they could be the drive splines from the crank. How do the drive shaft splines look??

Re: 1974 Johnson

The splines were good (not rounded or scored)I'll check to see if it's metal.
Thank You,
Jay
