Just figured I would start a quick build thread, not much to add, but a good chance to introduce myself.
I picked this boat up this fall for what I thought was a fine price. Its a 1974 Larson All American 186 with a Volvo Penta 431A/290A. Loaded with a marine stereo, all the accessories including a set of skis and even a brand new depth finder.

I paid $700CAD for it because the motor developed a knock according to the PO. I figured OK, worst case I'll learn how to re power a boat and the galvanized trailer has to be worth that...
I put the muffs on at the shop and fired it up. Definitely a serious knock, but not engine noise, it was coming from the stern drive. Started tearing it down with help from iBoats, hoping it was just the u joints and not the bearings in the flywheel cover. I was a little disappointed when I discovered the knocking was coming from that main shaft flopping around in there, not a bearing left on the outerside of the flywheel cover.
Out came the motor, cleaned everything up, assessed the damage, installed new bearings, lubed everything up and started reassembly. I was very happy to hear the knock gone when I first bumped the key.
My previous boat was also a vintage. An old 1969 Chrysler Trihull with a matching 1969 Chrysler 70hp outboard.
