Ok guys this is the latest on the motor from hell
I had my friend bring over his spark tester and
On the top two cylinders there seem to be the problem On one of them it will get spark and lose it then when you raise engine idle you hear a crack as spark ignites and engine runs nice then when you lower idle it loses spark and dies
On the other side it will keep spark but not a very strong spark
It is both top cylinders that are having the issues one is worse then the other
Should I go with power pack is on its way out ?

Re: 1975- 115hp power pack problem

you need to do a poerpack output test. That is, using a peak reading volt meter, test the output of the powerpack to the coils (each coil individually)
you should get 180 volts or better delivered to the coil otherwise you have a problem with the pack. You could also have a cracked coil arcing out.

Hi
I replaced the coils lastweek so I dont think that is causing the problem
On the power pack test I have an electonic volt meter will that work or do I need something different

That engine must be turning over at cranking speed at least 300 rpms in order to energize the powerpack properly. Any less results in erratic or no ignition.

If the engine cranks over slowly, clean and tighten all cable connections (All). A loose or tight but dirty connection will result in a hot cable (easy to find). A faulty starter will get hot quite fast also.

Have you examined the stator visually and closely?

Any cracks and/or signs of melting down, a sticky substance dripping out of it? If so, replace it.
