Clams Thanks for that information, got to say I was hopping you would be the man to answer this question you seem to know a lot about the vintage mercury inline 6 motors. I am going to try to install this motor today on my boat, I took the 850 off and left the power trim and tilt attached to the boat, I got everything apart and the last item to take off the 850 so it would come off was the steering rod, did that and found out how heavy these motors are

now I have the 1500 in the back of my Gmc Jimmy took off the rams the steering rod one big spring & the mounting bracket (I left the 850 mounting bracket and trim and tilt bracket on the boat).<br />Clams I really do not want to take apart the lower unit to disable it, couldn't I just take out the cotter pin, remove the shaft, remove the plastic deal the rod screws into and secure the rod so it can still move up and down but not function? I thought about cutting the rod off about 2" up from where it comes out?<br />jvc43
