My new to me 1975 25 HP Evinrude came in today! Of course, DHL delivered it to the wrong house. Didn't find it until 10:00 p.m. Got it off e-bay for $460. I hope it is as good as my 1975 6HP I bought off e-bay in June. I really think fall is the best time to get motors off e-bay. Going to run it in the Ky River tomorrow before I leave feedback.

My 1975 20HP has sure been good to me - also an ebay purchase 4 years ago. I wish you the same luck as I.

Decent! Keep us posted. How does that EBay purchase work? Can you send a money order and hope what you order is sent?

The '75 20hp evinrude is a sharp looking motor--nice color scheme. I want to see a pic of your "new" '75 25hp. They are very nice motors-- Also, I have bought 7 motors on ebay in the last couple of years and yes--I did send a money order every time. The only trouble I've had is 3 out of 7 had damage to the tiller handle or carrying handle because of a drop during shipping so ask to pay extra to get it insured and have them take off the tiller handle if possible and really try to protect it all the way around. I have found all but 1 person that I have dealt with on ebay to be pretty honest but I like to check their feedback. All of the motors no matter the price or description needed work but were reasonably described. Only 1 horror story in my 15 or so deals I've made. There are still honest folks out there..... hope my luck continues.

Re: 1975 25 HP Evinrude came in today!

I got it started in the driveway, but when I took it to the river, it was hard to start, and the recoil starter pawl broke. I think I flooded it because black stuff liquid (gasoline I guess) was coming out of the exhaust. I ordered the part from NAPA. It will be in Tuesday. Looks to be a good candidate for decarboning!

This one seems really dirty. Looks like heads have been off; paint is chipped on nuts. Coils on this model are not under the flywheel. I'll go on and replace those.

Does anyone have access to a picture on how the spring and pawl are supposed to fit together? I think the big spring must fit in the groove in the large center piece, but since it was broken when I saw it for the first time. I'm not sure.

I'll post picture after I make sure it runs good.

Replaced the pawl with one from NAPA. Had to ream out the center to get it to work properly. This motor seems to smoke a lot at idle. It might be because the water is so cold. Got it up to full throttle several times and does run good. Doesn't idle as well as I hoped. Idles to around shift, but doesn't get to slow. Again, might be cold weather related. I would like to run it full throttle for 20 minutes to get it cleaned out real good. Shifts well, and holds gear at WOT. I visually see a small crack in one of the coils mounted on the side of the engine. This may be the root of my idle situation.

My '99 30hp johnson smokes as bad at idle as my 50's models that use 24:1. I wouldn't worry. Glad to hear it's running good. :)

I had a 75' Johnson 25 on a 13' Whaler and ran it 23 years. It still had compression in the 120's and I only sold it because the old lady got tired of pull starting it.

BAD NEWS!

Drained out the lower unit lube and...no lube! Only foul smelling brown water. No gasket on the bottom. Held gear during sea trials yesterday. What do I do? Motor was listed as having a good lower unit. How much $$$ should I try to get from seller to avoid SCATHING feedback?

Fill it with lube, replace the drain/fill plug seals and see what happens. It may be fine.

I haven't left this guy feedback yet. Should I wait until this weekend when I have a chance to run it, or try to get something out of him now. I ordered new sealing washers this morning before I opened it up. Since it was sold as having a good lower unit, I really feel deceived. I only paid $460, but still I was expecting a better representation.

Gator,
Most of the time folks ship motors with no lower unit oil to satisfy the shipping companies. Take it apart and reseal it. Pay close attn. to the drive shaft and prop shaft where the seals ride. If they aren't too badly grooved, you probably still have a good motor. A seal kit is only about 30 bucks. You probably needed to do it anyway. You can also look at the clutch dog and ears inside the gears to see if they have any chips on them. I have not gotten a motor on ebay yet that didn't need a lower unit seal job. Most people don't pay any attention to the lower unit and the average joe thinks if no grease or oil is leaking OUT that it is "good". Take it apart and check it out before you get too P.O.'d . The experts here can probably help you get it RIGHT for very cheap.
Just my opinion,
JBJ
