1975 40 horse mercury out board reverse

i just bought the boat it has a 40 horse mercury outboard it works forward but wont go into reverse the guy i got it off said it was unhooked i felt the shift linkage its loose like it is unhooked how do i fix this or how costly please help

Is pin that adjust the trim in. It will not go into reverse if pin is not present. Reverse lockout safety. I'm new to boating and recently discovered this.
