After a lot of time spend wrassling with the problem I have learned that the cause of my choke not work correctly is the missing spring in the manual side.

I have found an original spring and now want to know how it is oriented when in the correct position.

If you have a factory manual the spring is vaguely shown in Fig 3-7 or 8---it's the vertical thingy crossing the "quadrant".

Any pointers will be gratefully appreciated--as it is I can have full choke (electrically) or no choke but no part choke.

As I recall, the 3 positons of the manual choke lever, quatrant as you call it, are choke off, choke electric, and choke on. In choke on position, the mentiioned spring closes the choke. In choke off position, the quadrant holds the choke open. In the center position, neither the spring nor the quadrant have anything to do with it, only the electric solenoid actuates the choke. There is no fixed partial choke position. If additional choking is needed after starting, just "bump" the choke switch.
Having said all that, some models did have an electrically operated partial warm-up function actuated by a thermal switch, but I don't think that applies in your case.

FR:

TNX for response. I have read similar intelligence ref. the manual choke slider but am saddened by the idea that there is no part choke position. Most other small engines in my experience offer some sort of partial choke to keep the engine going and useful while it warms up. This one, thankfully, does reach useful temperature pretty quickly but I know that;s because it is tuned somewhat richer than woudl otherwise be possible.
