1975 85hp johnson

I have a 1984 tracker (evinrude/Johnson) 40 hp on my pontoon. I have a 1975 85hp Johnson that I want to put on it. Both engines have the red plug. Will the controls from the 40 work with the 85. Thanks in advance for any info.

First, find out the rating of the boat. 85HP seems like a lot of HP unless the toon is rated for it.

The red plug control boxes fit from 1973 through 1995 engines. Those boxes vary a little-depending whether the handle has the trim switch or not. In 1982 the emergency stop lanyard switch was added. The ends of the control cables changed in 1979.

As said above, check the HP rating of the boat.

thanks for the input. the pontoon is a 24ft party barge and is rated for 90hp. Currently it is a little front heavy and was hoping that the 85hp would level it out some.

If it is healthy the 85HP sounds like a good choice.
