I've searched the archives, but I still need help. I'm getting gas to the carb, I'm getting spark from the plugs - still won't start. after several attempts I can check the plugs and the plugs will be wet with gas. Have run it twice with no problems before- had to park it for a month( engine covered with tarp) and then the problem started- what else is there to try?

Middleground-
Is the only way to correct a flooding with a rebuild ?- I tried the choke, half choke , no choke on diffferent occaisons and still no go. Tried with the gas tank unhooked to clear the carb and still nothing. This is an electric start motor if that matters.

Thanks- the motor had new coils and plugs when I got it. Pretty good spark- comparable to lawnmower type sparks I've seen. So off I go to rebuild!

Dunlapdr....just curious...

How are you "measuring" spark?

Your engine spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a good hot spark. If it dosen't, I would look to the points or power coil.

Is the woodruff key the 2 big teeth on the twist grip linkage?

Re: 1975 9.9 evinrude

A woodruff key is a half moon shaped peice of metal. The woodruff key marinegrh is talking about is on the crankshaft's flywheel taper. It indexes the flywheel with the crank's position. If the flywheel nut is not properly torqued, the flywheel can shear the key and turn on the crankshaft, sending timing _way_ out, since timing is found from flywheel position, not crank position.
EDIT: Unless your engine has points, in which case you'll probably simply loose spark. The points read the crankshaft directly.

Good luck!

Rebuilt the carb- pretty easy really - and cleaned it all up with some carb cleaner- runs good. I have to find the best low idle set still but problem solved!! Thanks guys
