1975 evenrude25 pops in and out of gear when going

My motor keeps jumping in and out of gear when riding along bbrr bump bbrr bump brrrrr bump that is the sound I hear and feel it bounce in and out.<br />Can anyone help ??? (THANK'S )

Sounds like your shift dogs are worn.After repair be sure to idle down low before shifting.And shift crisply but not forcefully.<br /> Good luck.

Beside the clutch dog, you will probably need a new forward gear. I would inspect both the forward and reverse gears carefully for round in the recesses (where the dog teeth land). Also, the suggestion about how to shift is well taken. Poor shifting technique is the usual reason for clutch dog and LU gears failing.<br />Jim

Sometimes it's the remote cable adjustment or the shift lever itself. Remove the remote cable and try it. If still jumping, see if there's an adjustment for the shift shaft attached to the shift lever and adjust it so it engages more. If not, adjust the shift shaft where it attaches inside the mid unit. If the shift shaft is all the way engaged and it still does it, then you need to fix the inside of the lower unit.
