The starter solenoid has power on the main lug from the battery, as soon as the solenoid engages you hear the click but then I lose my 12volts on the main lug. Any ideas about where to start?

Check all battery cables and connections.-----Load test your battery even if new.----And if starter is original it would be a good idea to pull it apart to inspect brushes.---Little bit of grease for bushings.----Easy job.

I did all the above and if I take a jumper cable and go straight to the starter it will work. . But if I go thru the solenoid I have 12 volts on the main lug until the solenoid energizes.

Check your voltage across the battery terminals while activating the start circuit. If it checks OK, then you have a voltage drop somewhere between the battery and solenoid - probably a poor connection somewhere.

Well----I think that 12 volt circuits are very easy to trouble shoot and repair.-----The trouble might be that as simple as poor connections or bad ground.----Keep us posted on the outcome / solution-Thanks.

Symptoms strongly suggest a bad battery cable connection. Don't just look at them and wiggle them, remove them and clean them shiny clean and reassemble tightly.
