Hi,

I am a first time poster. I bought this motor and it has been sitting up for several years. Rebuilt the carb and it seems to run on the stand ok. I am having an issue with water pump. Where is the pee hole on this motor? I don't think it is pumping water. I know it is making pressure because when it runs water will flow out of the hole on the side of the spacer above the lower unit. How do I know if it is flow water up to the powerhead? Also when you pull the lower unit it has a copper tube that is pretty loose that goes up towards the power head should it be loose or tight?

Thanks,

John Lee

Most motors the water tube is set in grommets and would appear pretty firm.Sounds like you need to check the grommets. If running in a barrel be sure the water is above the pump.Don't know about a telltale hole but they usually appear in the pan just below the powerhead. If you look under the cowl you should see a little hose to it if it is there.
Some motors the water comes out of the relief port on the leg.
You can get an idea how well it is cooling by CAREFULLY feeling the head as you run it.It should be too hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you.BE CAREFULL.If it has a telltale it could be plugged with a bug nest and can usually be cleared with a piece of wire.Be careful of the hose.

How do you check the "grommets" also where is the thermostat on the motor. I guess I really need a repair manual anybody have one they want to sell cheap?

The 75' 9.9/15's didn't have a telltale or pee hole. The thing to do is put it in the water (or trash can full of water) and run it. Watch the exhaust relief holes just below the lower pan on the midsection. should be some misty water coming outta' here. Of course check the engine temp. It'll get real hot at idle if the pump is not working or the t-stat is stuck closed.

The t-stat is located on the bottom of the head behind a cover. Should be about eight bolts holding the cover on. Little hard to get to but can be done if the t-stat needs replaced.
