starting on the restoration of my grandfather's old 12' 1976 scout john boat. its got a 1975 15504C 15hp evinrude on it.

hasnt been touched and sitting on back of the boat since 2006...yay! sigh.

the engine cove latch is completely frozen. I've been hitting it with PB blaster past couple of days. already broke off the end of the latch but been trying to get it to wiggle with pliers and taps from a hammer and using a big flat head screw driver to try to get it to budge but nothing is really working.

I'm really afraid to hit it with heat to be honest as the cover is fiberglass and such. any ideas?

here's the engine cover diagram:

found a couple on ebay but I'm kind of reluctant to drill it out or cut it off and hurt the engine pan on accident...

any chance you can drill a very small hole (to be pached later and painted over) and insert a small spray can plastic straw to shoot the release agent (PB or WD 40) directly on the lock mecanism hook .

you could even drill from the underbelly where it won't even show cosmetically.

yeah too bad as I went out to do this very thing, I decided to tap on it again a couple times and the handle literally crumbled to pieces lol. I just pushed it through into the cowl a couple minutes ago and got the cowl cover off. looks like I'll be ordering a new latch off ebay...

on another note, hit everything with pb blaster and freed up the starter pull and such. everything seems to be working pretty good and the engine turns over nicely. only thing that is relatively hard to move is the forward/neutral/reverse lever. hit all of it with pb blaster as well and I'm just going to let it sit over night so I dont break that handle as well.

The prop has to be moving to shift properly. Also take the lower unit to see if that frees up the shift handle. If it does the problem is in the gear case. Does the gear case have lube in it? If not fill it with tyranny fluid and let it sit a couple days.

If it does not have lube in it and has been sitting a while, the tranny fluid will help lube and clean it. That's why you let it sit a couple days. IF it had lube in it should be fine. BUT if the shift rod is stuck in the bushing, then tranny fluid can help lube it.
