1975 Evinrude Control Box

I have a 1975 Evinrude 115 with a power pilot control box. I had to change the key
swicth. No problem getting the box apart, problem now is when I put the two pieces
togeather I have to line up the shifter cog with the shift cable but there is a spring loaded ball on the backside of the shift cog. Is there a trick to holding back the spring to get the cog to seat itself

Take the cap off that holds the ball and spring, then install the shifter cog. After that carefully install the ball and spring and then the cap.
