I have a 115ETL75E which is missing the front cowl latch. I have tried looking up this part both on iBoats and elsewhere and can't find anything. Maybe I am just not searching the correct areas or using the right terms. The part I am missing goes just in front of the air silencer. It screws to the end of the latch flipper (not sure what to call that either). Here is a pic:

Any help finding a source for this part will be appreciated.

$0.01 for your thoughts,
Joe

Re: 1975 Johnson 115 HP cowl latch

Indymike,

Thanks for the response. I ran that number through USBoatSupply's part number lookup and it gives me a superseded part number up to a new number 323170, which is described as "HOOK-MTR CVR-REAR". I thought that the rear and front were different, but on closer looking at the manual maybe they are the same - just flipped around the opposite way.

I don't have a local OMC dealer that is convenient, but there is a local boat repair shop that I am going to try to give a little business. I do most of my own wrenching, but there will inevitably be something I don't know how to do and I will be glad there is a local guy still in business.

Hey, while you have your parts manual out, could you look up the gasket that goes all the way around the bottom of the cowl? I would like to look it up and get an idea of what they should cost. It also sounds like I am going to have to try to get my hands on a parts manual for this motor.

Thanks for the help,
Joe

Originally posted by OBJ:
Joe, it's called the Front Motor Cover Hook. Newest part number is 330253...'bout 5.40 American. Try the links below. Should be able to fix you up.

http://www.twincityoutboards.com/

http://www.tenkillermarine.com/
OBJ,

You are just about the greatest thing since sliced bread. ;)

Now another question, is it worth it for me to track down and buy a parts manual for this motor? It seems like nearly all the numbers are going to be out of date. Maybe I just need to find a better place to look up parts...any suggestions? I do use iBoats fairly often, and the parts finder is easy to use...but for things like a Front Motor Cover Hook there doesn't seem to be any way to look it up. Of course, I couldn't find the part from the number you just gave me on either of the sites you gave either. And no way to even look up the gasket for around the cowl. :(

Thanks again,
Joe

A parts manual is a plus for any engine. Some of the part numbers may be superceded but any John/Rude dealer can help you with them or post them here for up dating. Most companies like iboats stock the more common parts for ignition, mechanical, etc. The small parts like you are looking for may only be available from a dealership or an outfit that specializes in small parts. Yes, sometimes you will find discontinued parts. But, there is places that specialize in those also. It's just knowing where to find these places that can be difficult. One place that stock a lot of discontinued parts is SeaWay Marine in Seattle Washington. Not sure if they have a web site.

Re: 1975 Johnson 115 HP cowl latch

Indy and OBJ,

Well, I just bought a parts catalog for $10 including shipping. Should make life a little easier.

As for the gasket, I am sure that SOMEWHERE there is at least the material that can be cut to length. I will just have to find it. Heck, I might just roll up to my friendly neighborhood boat and motor repair shop and see if they have a whole roll of it. I need to buy something from them anyway. :)

BTW, the Classicglastron.com site lists a toll free number for Seaway as:
SEAWAY MARINE, NEW & USED, SEATTLE, WA, TF (800) 332-0803

For that matter, they have a whole list of places that sell new, used, or new but discontinued/obsoleted parts. The link to it is Classic Glastron Resource List

Thanks again,
Joe
