1975 Johnson 115 Kills When Put in Neutral

Peolpe,

Would anyone have an idea why my engine would keep killing when I pull it back into neutral? I am able to start it at high idle, but I am having a hard time in just letting it idle without the high idle. When I finally do get it into gear it runs great, but when i slow down to idle it kills again.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have had the carbs rebuilt and checked, and I wanted to have an idea of what to look for or tell them when I bring it into a shop. Thanks,

When the carburetors are replaced, they have to be synchronized to work with the throttle lever. If the idle is not set properly, the engine will run too slowly under load and stop running.

It is especially important that the shop either have a test tank and test prop, or set the idle in gear floating free, on the water.

You can get an idea of how well the idle is set by the reading on your tachometer, or by using a inductive tachometer. It should idle in gear on the water, floating free at 650 to 700 RPM.

Make sure to let the engine warm up first before shifting.
