Upon removing the gearcase in my 1975 johnson 25 i found what looks like oil coating everything inside. When we finally got it running we noticed a black goo substance coming out from the exhaust. What causes this? Is it a blown seal or does it just need to run to clean out? Thanks for your help!

Gotta be one of the most often asked questions. Answer is it is NORMAL. It is the oil that you put in the gas. Every bit of that oil goes through the engine as it runs. Part of it is burned (smoke) and the rest goes out of the exhaust to worry guys like you and everybody else. Once in the barrel, it emulsifies with the water and makes that cruddy scum.

Get it on a boat on the lake and it will be much cleaner. And stop worrying about it.
