I have a 1975 Johnson 50 HP that was given to me. It starts and idles but kinda rough and dies. I dropped the lower and the water impeller was toast. The vanes were more than halfway gone. I did a compression checked on both cylinders. Top was 100 and bottom was 110. Do you guys think this engine is prolly toast. Basically what I'm asking is if it would be worth it to replace the water pump and try and utilize the engine. I'm pretty sure its been overheated repeatedly. Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi, Jklug.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Those numbers are pretty good. The engine is not toast.

Replace the water pump, check for debris in the block and go boating.

I'll take the advice and replace the water pump and see if I can get it running right. I guess I was just looking for some reassurance because it is In rough shape. I am a newbie when it comes to boats so I'm learning as I go. I appreciate the input, thanks! BTW there was melted rubber in the water pump housing from the impeller...kinda worried, and I had to cut off the impeller it was so seized....
