Hi there ya'll.
I've got a '75 Johnson 50 Sea Horse that's having starter or solinoid issues. First time i tried it sunday, it turned over and started fine. Ever since it just "clicks" and dosen't turn the engine over. I cleaned all the battery cables, both ends and cleaned the solinoid wires as well. The thing still did it, so i got a new battery as mine was a little older - no change. Would the 20A fuse on the engine cause that? The fuse looked ok, i'll ohm it out with my ohm meter just in case. I took my jumper cables and jumped from the battery hot terminal to the starter wire output from the solonoid and the starter turned over. Solinoid? Also i'd like to put a tach on this boat, maybe a 2 1/2" or something similar, ya'll have any advice on that?
Thanks in advance for your help.

sounds like solenoid, if jumping the starter worked. try jumping the solenoid, jump from pos cable going to solenoid, to top small post on solenoid. personally i think a tach is useless, except for getting the boat and motor properly set up. a tiny tach will work for that.

On the tach, the hot-rodder in me just wants an instrument or two. lol The solinoid i had my meter on it, one of the small posts got 12.74v on the key to start position, the other small terminal had nothing - is that right? I thought i read that both small terminals needed 12v?? I would think that the solinoid works like the old ford's maybe, and can stick or corrode internally? Thanks for the help.
