1975 Johnson 50hp Always in reverse

After replcing the water pump sytem in this motor it seems to only be in reverse whether the shifter is in forward, neutral or reverse, what did I do and can it be fixed? I am new to boating and boat motors but I am trying hard to learn, any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried disconnecting the shifter cable at the motor and shifting the motor there? The cable may have come loose, or broken somewhere between the control and the motor. If it shifts at the motor, then look to your cable or your control for the problem. If it doesn't shift at the motor, then your problem lies from that point. Look to the shift rod down into your LU.

Thank you for your reply! When I use the shift lever I can see the cables moving on side of motor. When I changed propeller I had to remove LU so I had to disconnect shift linkage, I wonder if when I put back together I did it wrong, although it seems to go back on only one way.
