I have a 1975 johnson 50 hp with random or no fire . I have no POWER on the power pack at all . Now it does take spells where it will fire . Ive checked grounds wire harness ignition switch kill wire etc . Has me stumped pretty bad . No fire out of either coil . I do not know about air cap as I dont see points on this engine . I dont wanna throw parts at it either nor can I afford to take it to the boat shop . ANY help is much appreciated

Post a model number, '75 should not be an electric shift.

O.K. much better, one thing to check as I've had it happen to me, there are two wires that go from the power pack up along the timing arm and then under the flywheel to the sensor. I've had it happen where the wires are trapped by a little anchor clip the insulation cracks and they short to the timing arm. This kills the sensor signal, no signal no spark.

All you can do is guess if you don't have a manual and the proper test equipment. Packs used to be the biggest culprit.

Sorry for a much delayed response. As this project has been a nightmare . Wound up replacing the brain (power pack) stator and both ignition coils . The coils seemed to be the piece that was bad .
