1975 johnson 70hp

there is a 75' 70hp johnson for sale for 500$ however, it is off the boat so i couldnt try and run it until i got it home. is this a safe buy? i know these motors are excellent motors but doesnt mean this one is. what are your thoughts?

Don't buy it until u can at least test compression.

Yes they are excellent motors, I have a '77. I like it even more when it starts up and runs with very little smoke.

Also check the spark for jumping a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester and the g/c for having any water in it.

thanks for the replies. i did buy the motor for 350$ it needs a new seal kit in the lower unit for sure as i found water in the oil. i am mechanically inclined but have not had too much experience with motors yet. would a lower unit rebuild be something i could handle?

The first thing to do if you're going to do this work yourself is get an OMC Factory service manual. Stay away from Clymer or Seloc
