1975 Johnson 9.9 Coils question

Folks, a friend emailed me this pic of his coils in his 1975 9.9hp. As some of you know, I only work on the older engines so this is foreign to me. Are these coils charge coils? Do they look ok? As compared to old style coils they'd be toast. He is having an intermittant ignition issue which is why he pulled it apart. Any ideas, comments? thanks...

Oh, and why are there 3 of them??

replace everything under there, and be done with it.

What they heck are the pieces? Not coils in the conventional sense? And That sounds expensive to replace all... Is there diagnostics that can be done?

the coils that are suppose to be in there are the same number as the 15 hp evinrude coils of the same vintage,nothing special about them atall othe than on the 15 i had the coils were on the outside not under the flywheel.
