New to me Merc 500. I guess they call it a Brown Stripe, Anyway, I'm starting the process of seeing if it will run. Right off the bat the cables need changed. This is what I have on hand. Are these adjuster nuts replaceable? cable adjuster nut.jpg

That whole brass piece unscrews if you can undo the lock nuts on the slide and you can replace them, ive never bought just the nut, but they do come off.

Thanks for the quick response. The one broken is plastic. I do have brass on the old ones. Undo lock nuts? Would you explain how I do that? I've been out there looking, just don't want to damage anything.

A " brown stripe " motor may be an 84 / 85 model.--Any pictures of cowling ?--Serial # is also required to identify.----Is there a belt driven distributor ?

Well, The first/main hose in the motor is dry rotted,I cut the rotten off and hose clamped it. Works enough to run the engine. I have found fuel lines, but nothing to tell me which is which besides part numbers. Are these numbers in the manual? I have ordered the water pump kit and shifter cable. Now I need to figure out how to connect the steering cable linkage. The cable has a quick release and the motor a linkage rod that is to long. I do not know what brand of steering cable to order the right parts. I will try and get pics up.

That's a blue band motor from the looks of it. I have a '77 blue band 500 on my boat. And btw I just changed my cables 2 days ago and old ones are sitting on my garage floor. If all you need is the adjusters or anything off of my old cables, you're welcome to them. The sheath is bad on these cables, they still worked fine, but they were on their way out.

Thanks for the info and the offer. I could not figure out how to take the cable apart so I ordered new. Another question is, Should I use all four additional mount holes? I don't really want to drill more holes in the transom. On the stripe issue,I was going buy the upper and lower color on the cover. Thanks again.

My control box must be wore out. It wants to stick after putting it into reverse. I'll take pics when I get a chance.

You can replace the fuel hoses with hardware store stuff. Get brass NPT straights & elbows, etc., make up some new hoses from 1/4-inch fuel line stock, and clamp it all together with proper hose clamps. Much cheaper than getting the pre made stuff.

if you make fuel line be sure to get brass npt thread and get sealer for the threads. NPT is designed to work with a thread sealer. Do not use gasoline resistant teflon. It can come apart and end up in the carbs  Permatex makes a good product.I used Permashield. Works great. Just follow the directions and your set. I just made lines from pump to carbs last week.

Thanks for the input guys. I also have to redo all the ground wires. The insulation has rotted away on them. Could this be caused by lack of an anonizer?

Okay, I'm about to throw in the towel. I keep getting the wrong parts for this motor and control box.The serial is 4285056 on the motor. I need Part # 59372 for the control box. No luck. I think I need waterpump #48746A2. Can't find one.....I now have waterpump kit #821354A2 which I don't remember where I bought...lol. Throw it in a parts bin I guess. The pump housing reads 46-69200 but I can not find any reference. Argh. Help.
