I blew a line while trimming up to trailer. The lines appear to be nylon tubes on this boat. Its right behind the engine and not visible, i do believe after reading a lot here that there is a block that comes off from the outside that allows access.

Question is which line? and are the lines all nylon tube. all the lines i saw were but was hard to see them all. I found replacement kits for these lines online which is fine but i guess my question is again are they ALL Nylon? It doesnt seem too strong for a hydraulic line to me.

Im a i/o newb but not a boat newb...

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Only the Up/ return side is nylon tubin', 'n usually, only from the reverse-lock to the pump,......

The Down/ pressure side is standard crimped hyd. lines,...

Well I ordered two replacement lines today. Is it ok to use an "up" line as a return line?

Has anyone replaced the inside trim hoses? its obviously easy at the pump end but at the transom it looks like they go thruough... Is there a piece that comes off from the outside to get at them?

Geez pardon the newbness.. as i search more and more threads i discover something called a trim block... there is no reference to a trim block in my shop manual anywhere...I assume it unbolts from the transom on the outside to replace the inner hoses which get threaded back thru and hooked to pump?... Boat is 100 miles from here so im gathering parts and tools to hopefully pull this off this weekend.

I assume by its age and Made in USA heritage that everything on this boat SHOULD be standard and not metric... anyone aware of any "special tools" i might need besides line wrenches?

Re: 1975 Mercruiser 165 trim hoses.

WElllll after pulling the boat out to have at the lines its all fixed. After removing the Trim block and prying it open and disconnecting both up and down lines it was quite obvious that it was the UP line as just the fitting came out with no hose attached. It takes a LOT of cursing and swearing in more than one language to get the new line stuffed up thru that hole and re attached to the trim plate. The up line however was the easy one trying to re attach the down line and NOT get it cross threaded too about 40 minutes... more swearing!! once that was connected trying to get the trim plate back in place was another 20 minutes and involved some brute force and ignorance!...

The motor compartment is pretty deep and of course the trim pump is on the transom. while lying across two batteries and with a distributor cap in my armpit i went to attach the line to the pump. this goes pretty much by feel as you cant see the hole i managed to get it started by hand and started to tighten it with a wrench when it seemed snug I added more fluid and tested it. There was oil pissing out so I tightened it some more and re tested more leak so i snugged again then i crawled in and looked and was horrified to see it looked crooked and crossthreaded..... Thinking I was doomed I unscrewed the fitting and spent almost a half an hour trying( and hoping) to get it re threaded and figuring there was now a new pump in my future. I DID manage to get it in straight eventually and it snugged right up leak free and after another oil fill it works like a charm didnt need bleeding.and back in the water for at least a part day of boating before the weather went for a poo. Remember to double check these things when changing hydraulic lines...
