Hi all; 1 of my problems is how motor starts! Repowered my super sport with this outboard last year. When got motor home done a compression ck. Was very happy 130# on 1 -135#s on 2 thru 6. I then replaced bad wires or repaired. Put fresh fuel in , hooked up battery & turned ign. key. She spun over strong, but did not fire until let off ign. switch. Then she fired up. Runs & idles great, this is the way have to start motor . The only other part have repaced is rectifier when installed new tach.? Does anyone have a suggestion were to look? Thank you. John, The proper way to start that lady is this: Pump primer bulb hard. Lift cold start lever all the way. Hold choke button down and crank motor until she fires. Now apply choke and adjust cold start lever to keep motor running until she is warmed up. These motors take a while to choke up and almost never flood.

Bad or miswired ignition switch or trigger fixing to fail. Check to make sure you have constant 12v on white wire when cranking,if it turn offf when cranking and comes back with key to run position it a key-switch problem.

Thanks for input Chris 1956. That is exact procedure I use, however fuel is not the problem.

Thank you Faztbullet. I am going to ck ign. switch. Am almost certain after reading your post it is the trigger. I installed a brand new Merc controller with trim buttons built in.

How did you wire the new controller as wiring is different on new style controls....

It is called early model remote controls with trim incorporated into it. They had 2 models. One for v/6 & 1 one for inline s. Another thing I should tell you Faztbullet is the guy I purchased from did not know squat about this outboard, but know he had been tinkerin g with it?

Re: 1975 Mercury 1500

If it like the one below it is possible it is wired or attempted to rewired for a ADI ignition Still check white wire when cranking....
