I was just given a 1975 sears ted williams 7.5hp air-cooled motor. I need to know where the water exits so I can check to see if the pump is working correctly.

It should spray out a bunch of small holes on the backside of the midsection just above the waterline, but most exits out the exhaust snout behind the prop.

does the motor have to be in gear for the impeller to spin or will it still pump water in neutral? where does water enter the motor?

According to my Ted Williams owners manual, the motor must be in gear for the impeller to spin....The water enters just beneath the gavitational plate(I think that is what is called)..its the flat piece just above the prop...The manual also warns of idling for long periods which will cause the engine to over heat.
