i have spark on the second (bottom) plug but not the top, switched the transformers around and i have spark on only the bottom once again so i take it the coils are good.
i removed the flywheel and looked at the solid state ignition, looks interesting
i believe the capacitor in the eletronics is what fails?. i may try cutting it open and replacing that.
has anyone successfully fixed one of these or found a compatible other brand that may have one?.
also i am a good fabricator/tinkerer i think i could make a magneto/points/ condenser for this unit my only problem is the advance timing is this required or can it be set at tdc or a little after tdc permanently
also if it needed timing advance would it have to be done by a rotating plate?
i hate to see such a nice well built outboard go to waste.

Pretty much two rules. You need spark and you need gas. You mentioned having spark in the bottom cylinder. I personally would start with putting in new plugs. If that dont work have a look at the points. Are they dirty? If so take them out and use a piece of sand paper and clean up the tip. Theyre not expensive to replace either so if need be try that. Clean the magnetos on the fly wheel. Again use sand paper. I imagine you have 2 coils, if one is firing and the other isnt then it very well could be that you need a coil. As you likely know sears had several motors like eska, ted williams and game fisher. I have a ted williams 7.5 hp here that needs a lower unit. Looks exactly like a eska and im darn sure the parts are interchangeable. Have a look around i imaging you can fix it rather cheap. :D

no points on the 9.9 or 15 solid state garbage i want to fix the internals or build a new ignition for it,
funny you say that about the 7.5 i picked one up from a farmer that sat outside for years rebuilt the carb and it runs great. is the engine ever goes i'll sell you the lower.

Those solid state ignitions aren't too bad. A sierra 18-5193 OMC style ignition coil is a good replacement for the Tecumseh coils which are no longer made. CDI electronics rebuilds the solid state module....and they should last a lot longer now (once you get one rebuilt) than they used to, because the electrolytic capacitors used in the module, which always seem to fail, have come a long way in the past 30 years.

Let me know how the Ignition rebuild is going. I have a Ted - 15hp with the exact same problem.

try boatfix. com. i'm waiting for a rebuilt ss ignition from them now. just over 200 $. that is in outboard terms "fairly cheap" . I can get 18 hp out of the 15 with a few easy mods. and at 67 lbs, nothing today comes close to that. my new yamaya 15 weighes 87 lbs and when it works my ted williams will woop it bad.
