I picked up a really nice, in fact you may say like new 1976 10 hp chrysler outboard the other day for next to nothing. Push button electric start (not the stupid looking one either). You can eat off it!! 135 psi each cylinder, fires right up instantly.

Now the issue, it idles down, doesn't stall, excellent throttle response, will run for hours......but it has a pop or backfire every so often. I thoroughly cleaned the carb and plugs but it did not help. It does not do it @ WOT.

Carb issue???? I don't mess with these to much....

The air screw might need adjusting.Start it let it warm and slowly turn it in till it bottoms out REMEMBER HOW MANY TURNS!!!!!!!!
Then put it back where it was. Then turn it out 1/8th of a turn untill it gets better or worse.TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!!SLOWLY!!!!!!Then turn it back the other way untill it gets better or worse.J

Don't screw with success! It runs well at full throttle and only pops once in a while--leave it alone.

(Could be points or condensers--but why bother pulling the flywheel for such a small annoyance?)

If it is not running 100% properly it is a large annoyance to me. That is why I want to fix it!

Hi,

Please excuse me if stating obvious. Popping can be symptomatic of fuel starvation. Do you have clean fuel lines and filter before carb?
