If this is an outboard you will get more responses by moving this there. This section is for I/Os.

Water pump shaft, input shaft either broke or splines stripped. If you run it long enough, (in neutral, will it overheat?? Then it's as I mention'd above. I suggest a good service manual for anyone with a "stringer".

Gerry
Check the simple stuff first. I think this is a stringer with the big rubber boot but not sure if you have thru hub exhaust with that year or not. If it is pre thru hub exhaust make sure you did not break the sheer pin. If it is thru hub exhaust then make sure not a spun hub, mark all the way across the prop with a magic marker and see if it stays lined up. Between the intermediate houseing and the out drive make sure the ball gears not broke and both sides turning when engine running.

Most likely though P.V. is right the short shaft that drives the water pump and the main drive gear likely had the splines stripped. Check and see if water pump working. In the water with engine running see if have water spraying on the ball gears out of the pee hole. On the muff this can be hard to tell as hose pressure will force water out that hole and also thru the engine and out the prop even with out motor running. If you turn water on very low and watch pee hole when start engine should see a stornger pee hole flow for a moment. I hope we are wrong as $800 or more around here to have fixed.
