I am installing my armature plate and the manual says lube the retaining ring and support. I am having trouble removing the screws holding the support and ring. They are flathead screws. Can I use heat?

Also, what needs lube, both sides of support and ring? And what can I use in place of OMC lube? I have a Autozone across the street.

I just want to do it right. Any help would be great.

Flathead screws?? That's news to me. Oh well, no matter, the answer is the same. If you are going to be working on outboard motors you need a must-have tool. It is a manual impact screwdriver. It has a bit that rotates when you whack it with a hammer. The hammer blow automatically does something else at the same time, it keeps the bit from popping out of the screw slot. It will loosen those screws instantly. And many other screws found all over the motor.

EDIT: The tool is reversible. It also will put those screws back in tightly, so they don't vibrate loose.

lube the top of the support and the base and center of the retaining ring < note the orientation of the retaining ring when disassembling as it is tapered >...a small tube of white lithium grease will do fine as a lube... a thin skin of lube is all that's necessary
