I am brand new to the forum, and just purchased a pontoon boat with a 1976 35HP Evinrude, model 35653S. The engine has not ran for at least two years, and was not properly stored. It has a very strong bad gas smell.
My question regards the ignition coils. I was turning the engine over with the starter and checking each coil for spark. Both coils would jump at least a 1/4 gap, but both wires that run to the plugs came loose from the coils. The wire can be reseated, but I don't know if this is OK or not. I have a number of other parts to order, just wondering if I should add two coils to the list I am compiling.
I have the proper service manual for this engine coming, and the last boat I owned 15 years ago had a 1983 35HP Johnson, so I have a hazy recollection of the engine, but don't recall the high voltage wire coming loose from the coils.
Thanks!
