I am brand new to the forum, and just purchased a pontoon boat with a 1976 35HP Evinrude, model 35653S. The engine has not ran for at least two years, and was not properly stored. It has a very strong bad gas smell.

My question regards the ignition coils. I was turning the engine over with the starter and checking each coil for spark. Both coils would jump at least a 1/4 gap, but both wires that run to the plugs came loose from the coils. The wire can be reseated, but I don't know if this is OK or not. I have a number of other parts to order, just wondering if I should add two coils to the list I am compiling.

I have the proper service manual for this engine coming, and the last boat I owned 15 years ago had a 1983 35HP Johnson, so I have a hazy recollection of the engine, but don't recall the high voltage wire coming loose from the coils.

Thanks!

They are not supposed to come out. Therefor, I've never forced one out to see what's in there, as somebody probably has done to yours before you got it.. Fairly safe to say if there will be a secure electrical connection, you can probably put them back in with some epoxy or something. That's my guess.
