Hi i have a 1976 johnson 40hp it was just all rebuilt this past winter ive had it out 4 times ran great till i ran out of gas once and i switched over to my other tank and fuel started pouring out the carb opening where the choke is. i had to be towed back the next day i fixed it i found the linkage for the throttle was out of place and it was pouring fuel in the carb as if it where running wide open, i had the boat out twice then ran out of gas again and switched to my other tank and fuel started pouring out the carb again the linkage is still in place. i let it sit a few days thinking it was flooded and it wont start now. please helppp i want to get out on the water soon

Howdy, aaronlee.

:welcome:

Sounds like there may be debris in the second tank that is jamming the inlet needle in the carb.

Thanks for responding. How would I find out if this is the problem and would it have still ran after that? It ran fine on the second tank of gas after I let it sit for a day now this time it won't start at all fuel just pours out the carb

I have the same engine. When you rebuilt the card, did you install a new float and set it properly per instructions? Reason I ask is it seems like your float may be sticking to the bottom of the bowl, OR not floating as it once did. Could be time to replace it... Also do check both tanks for trash in them and clean them out as well. And if you haven't already do so, replace all the fuel lines if they are a few years old. Some deteriorate very fast with todays fuel mixtures... Just some ideas...

I took it some where to have it rebuilt. It's ran fine the first 4 times after it was rebuilt how would I check the float?

Okay...could be you need to have it looked at again. But this time make sure whomever does it (you or somebody else) have them change the needle and seat AND even the float. And it has to come completely apart and cleaned to the metal (at least inside). There are tiny passages in there. So all of them need to be thoroughly cleaned for it to work properly again. The first person that did it could have reused the float and it isn't floating quite right anymore... The float (and it is a cork type too) doesn't last forever...

Do you have a filter between the tank(s) and the fuel pump?

I don't think it is all that hard to rebuild a carb and I just have finished rebuilding my carb for this same engine about a week ago, but I also don't know anything about your mechanical abilities. I will say that you absolutely have to remove the carb from the engine for starters. And that curtails removing the starter solenoid, the starter (with mounting bracket) and then the carb itself. And buy a rebuild kit with float or purchase a float separately as well. Then disassemble it totally and soak it in some carb cleaner until it is spotless inside and out. Some compressed air aids in this operation and to verify all passages are cleared. Most rebuild kits have a breakdown of the carb to show how it is assembled. So if you think you can do all that...I say have at it. It really isn't hard to do... Here is a picture of my carb I just finished...

I don't believe there is a filter it goes from my fuel lines to my primer right to the motor and thank you gm280 I think I'm going to give it a shot. Where would you recommend getting the parts?

You could buy all the parts here on iboats. I bought my kit on EBay and it was an OMC kit. It didn't come with the float, so I purchased that separately too. The gaskets and needle with seat comes with the rebuild kit. You can easily do some searching on these forums to see exactly how others did theirs and just take your time and follow their directions. Once you do it for the first time you will see just how easy it is... Good luck...
